    Sales Executive Job Description Template

A complete sales executive JD for Indian employers — with the four disclosures (field or inside, leads provided or self-sourced, pay structure, territory) that determine whether your new hire is still there in month four.

Sales hiring in India fails on retention far more often than on sourcing. Applications arrive; the problem is that a meaningful share of new hires discover in week two that the job is not what they understood it to be — that the leads they assumed would be provided are not, that the role is field rather than inside, or that the earnings they anchored on were the variable-inclusive number. Every one of those is a disclosure the job description could have made. This template makes them.

    Sales Executive

    About us

[Company name] sells [what you sell] to [who buys it]. This role covers [territory / segment] and is part of a sales team of [n].

    About the role

We are hiring a Sales Executive to own [new business / renewals / a named territory] for [product or segment]. You will [prospect / work leads generated by marketing — say which], qualify opportunities, run the pitch or demo, negotiate and close, and keep your pipeline current in [CRM]. This is a [field / inside / hybrid] role carrying a [monthly / quarterly] target.

    Key responsibilities

    • Generate and qualify opportunities in [territory or segment] through [state the actual mix — inbound leads, outbound calls, field visits, channel partners, references].
    • Run discovery and product pitches or demonstrations to [buyer persona — e.g. store owners, procurement managers, clinic administrators, founders].
    • Manage a [monthly/quarterly] target of [state the unit — number of accounts, order value, subscriptions] and forecast it accurately.
    • Negotiate commercial terms within the approved discount and credit policy, and escalate anything outside it before committing to the customer.
    • Maintain accurate pipeline hygiene in [CRM — e.g. Zoho, Salesforce, LeadSquared, HubSpot]: every conversation logged, every stage current, every next step dated.
    • Coordinate onboarding and handover to [customer success / service / operations] so the account starts well.
    • Follow up on collections and payment milestones with customers in your territory, working with [finance / accounts].
    • Report on territory coverage, funnel movement and loss reasons in the [weekly] sales review.

    Must-have requirements

    • [n]+ years in a quota-carrying sales role selling [product type] to [customer type].
    • A track record you can quantify: target, attainment and period. We will ask about the quarters you missed as well as the ones you made.
    • CRM discipline — you can describe your own pipeline from memory and it matches what is in the system.
    • Fluency in [languages — state them; for field roles in most Indian territories the regional language is a genuine requirement, not a preference].
    • [For field roles] Willingness to travel across [territory] on [n] days a week, and a two-wheeler with a valid licence.
    • Comfort with rejection at volume, and the discipline to keep prospecting when the pipeline looks full.

    Nice to have

    • Existing relationships in [industry / territory].
    • Experience selling into [specific channel — modern trade, general trade, enterprise procurement, hospitals, educational institutions].
    • Experience with a structured sales methodology and a defined qualification framework.
    • Exposure to solution or consultative selling with a multi-stakeholder buying committee.

    Qualifications

    • Graduate in any discipline. An MBA is not required for this role.

Experience: [x–y] years. Freshers are [eligible / not eligible] — state which, because sales JDs attract fresher applications at very high volume when this line is missing.

Location and work model: based in [city]; territory covers [areas]. [Field: expect n days a week in the market. Inside: office-based, n days a week.] Travel: [frequency and whether it is reimbursed, and how].

Reports to: [Area Sales Manager / Sales Head]. Team: [size and structure of the territory team].

Compensation: fixed plus variable. State the split, the payout frequency, what triggers variable payment (booked, invoiced, or collected), and whether travel and phone costs are reimbursed or built into the fixed component. Do not describe earnings as unlimited or uncapped unless the plan genuinely has no cap.

To apply: send your resume to [email / apply link] with your current target and last four quarters' attainment. Process: [n] rounds, including a role-play of a first call with a real objection from our market.

    How to adapt it

The template is the easy half. These are the decisions that decide whether the posting works.

Disclose field versus inside in the first two lines

This is the single highest-value edit you can make to a sales JD in this market. Field sales and inside sales are different working lives — travel, hours, physical demands, autonomy, family logistics — and candidates choose deliberately between them. A JD that stays vague, or that says "field/inside" as though the distinction were minor, will fill your funnel with people who are optimising for the other one.

Put it in the summary line, put it again in the location line with the number of days in the market, and say who pays for travel. Attrition in month one and two is very often just this.

Say where the leads come from

"Generate leads" is doing a great deal of hidden work in most sales JDs. A role where marketing delivers qualified inbound and a role where the executive cold-calls from a purchased list are the same job title and completely different work. Experienced closers will ask on the first call; if the JD has already answered honestly, you keep the ones who want that job and lose the ones who would have quit.

Write the actual mix as a rough proportion — "roughly 70% self-sourced outbound, 30% inbound from marketing campaigns" — and update it when it changes.

Publish the structure of the pay plan, even without figures

You may not want to publish numbers, and you do not have to. You should publish the mechanics: whether there is a fixed and variable split, how often variable pays, and — most importantly — whether variable is earned on order booked, invoice raised or payment collected. In markets where collections are slow, that last distinction is the difference between a plan candidates trust and one they resent.

Avoid "unlimited earning potential". Experienced salespeople read it as a signal that the fixed component is low and read past the rest of the JD accordingly.

    What to screen for

Signals specific to sales executive applications — not generic screening advice.

    Strong signals

    • Numbers with periods attached: target, attainment and the quarter. Salespeople who have carried a real quota quantify it habitually.
    • A stated average deal size and sales cycle length. This tells you instantly whether their experience transfers to your motion — someone closing in three days does not slot into a four-month enterprise cycle.
    • Clarity about lead source in their previous role. Candidates who volunteer "I built my own pipeline" are telling you something specific and checkable.
    • Named CRM plus a description of how they used it. "Salesforce" alone is weak; "I ran my forecast out of Salesforce weekly and my manager reviewed stage movement" is strong.
    • Territory and language fit stated explicitly — for field roles in India this is a hard operational constraint, and candidates who address it up front have read the JD.

    Looks strong, usually isn't

    • Achievement claims with no denominator: "achieved 150% of target" with no target, product or period named.
    • Title inflation. Business Development Manager is used across this market for roles ranging from junior outbound calling to genuine territory ownership — never infer scope from the title, always ask for quota and headcount.
    • Short tenures clustered in a pattern: three roles in three years is common in sales and not automatically disqualifying, but the reason matters and it is usually a pay-plan or lead-source mismatch worth asking about.
    • A resume that lists products but never buyers. Salespeople who describe what they sold and not who they sold it to usually had a narrow order-taking role.
    • Only inbound experience for an outbound role, or vice versa, presented as equivalent. It is not, and the candidate knows it.

    What repels good sales executives

Strong closers have options and they read job descriptions commercially. These four things end the read.

    • Hidden pay structure. A JD that will not describe the fixed/variable mechanics signals a plan the employer is not proud of.
    • Unrealistic requirement stacking: field travel, cold calling, demo delivery, account management, collections and reporting on one band, with no support function named.
    • "Aggressive" as a described quality. It reads as a culture where targets are chased by pressure rather than by process, and it is a term the strongest candidates in this market have learned to avoid.
    • No mention of what happens after the sale. If the JD never names a service, success or operations function, candidates assume they will be handling churn and complaints themselves — and often they are right.

How this JD changes ATS matching

Sales resumes are achievement-dense and keyword-poor: they are written in numbers and narrative, not in skill tokens, so keyword matching underperforms on this role more than almost any other. Two adjustments help.

    • Match on motion words, not the job title: "field sales", "inside sales", "B2B", "B2C", "channel sales", "lead generation", "account management", "key accounts". Title matching is unreliable here because titles are inflated across the market.
    • Name the CRM and its common variants — "Salesforce (SFDC)", "Zoho CRM", "LeadSquared", "HubSpot". CRM familiarity is one of the few hard tokens sales resumes reliably carry.
    • Include the industry and buyer words, because that is how sales candidates describe themselves: "FMCG", "BFSI", "SaaS", "EdTech", "general trade", "modern trade", "enterprise".
    • State the language requirement in the JD text. Candidates list languages on their resumes, and it is one of the few genuinely binary filters in field sales hiring.

    Frequently asked questions

    1
Should the sales JD mention the incentive amount?
Publish the structure rather than the amount if you prefer not to disclose figures: fixed plus variable, the approximate proportion, the payout frequency, and whether variable is triggered on booking, invoicing or collection. Candidates need the mechanics to evaluate the offer, and withholding them tends to surface as a declined offer or a month-two exit.
    2
What is the difference between a Sales Executive and a Business Development Executive?
In practice the titles are used interchangeably across Indian employers. Where a distinction is intended, business development usually leans toward new-market and new-partner development while sales execution leans toward closing in an established territory. Because the usage is inconsistent, describe the work in the summary rather than relying on the title to communicate it.
    3
Can we hire freshers into a sales executive role?
Yes, and many Indian employers do at scale. If you are, write a separate fresher variant: replace the quota history requirement with communication assessment and coachability, describe the ramp and the training, and be explicit about targets during the ramp period. Mixing both into one JD produces a shortlist you cannot compare.
    4
How do we reduce early attrition in sales hires?
Most of it is expectation-setting, and most of the expectation-setting belongs in the job description: field versus inside, where leads come from, how pay is structured, what the territory actually is, and what the first ninety days look like. Add a realistic job preview to the final interview — a day in the market, or a listen-in on live calls — and the mismatches surface before the offer rather than after.
