    Campus aptitude preparation, designed as a programme

    The aptitude round eliminates more students than every interview combined, and it is the most trainable stage in the whole process. This is how to run preparation for a full batch: diagnose, tier, drill, mock under real conditions, and act on the error log.

    Most campus selection funnels narrow hardest at the first automated filter, which means aptitude preparation has the best return of any readiness activity a cell runs — and it is the one most often outsourced to a two-day session before the season. Aptitude is a speed skill built by repetition under time pressure, so it responds to a programme and barely responds to a workshop. This guide is about designing that programme. It deliberately contains no company-specific test patterns: those change between cycles and campuses, and the discipline you actually want to teach is reading the pattern off the invite you were sent.

    01What the aptitude round actually tests

    Campus assessments are assembled from a small number of familiar sections, in combinations that vary by recruiter, role and cycle. What is worth teaching is what each section is measuring, because that determines how a student should practise it.

    • Quantitative aptitude: arithmetic fluency and pattern recognition under severe time pressure. Recall of standard forms, not mathematical depth.
    • Logical and analytical reasoning: puzzles, arrangements, series and data sufficiency. Tests whether a student can impose structure quickly and abandon a bad approach early.
    • Data interpretation: reading tables and charts and computing accurately from them. Usually the highest marks per minute available, and usually the section students skip.
    • Verbal ability: comprehension, grammar and usage. The most improvable section for students who read little, and the most neglected in preparation.
    • Domain or technical multiple-choice: fundamentals from the discipline. Curriculum-adjacent, so it rewards revision rather than drilling.
    • Coding or programming assessment: correctness against hidden test cases, sometimes with efficiency constraints and partial scoring.
    • Behavioural or psychometric inventories: consistency questionnaires. Advise honest, consistent answering — attempts to game these mostly produce inconsistency flags.

    Never publish 'the pattern' for a named company

    Section counts, timing, cut-offs and negative marking change between cycles and often between campuses in the same cycle. Circulate the test invite and the recruiter's own instructions, and build pattern intelligence from your own students' post-drive debriefs — dated, first-hand and specific to your campus.

    02Teach the arithmetic of the paper first

    Before any topic revision, teach students to read a test invite as a constraint problem. Every paper defines a seconds-per-question budget, and most students discover theirs during the test. Work it out on the board with whatever the actual invite says, for every drive.

    The four questions to answer from the invite, every time

    • How many questions in how many minutes — and therefore how many seconds per question on average?
    • Is the timing sectional or overall? A sectional clock removes the option of borrowing time from an easier section, and changes strategy completely.
    • Is there negative marking, and at what rate? This decides whether an educated guess between two options is worth taking.
    • Are there sectional cut-offs? If so, a strong overall score with one weak section can still fail, which means the weakest section is the one that needs the practice.

    From those four answers comes the only strategy advice that generalises: take a first pass answering what you can do inside the budget, mark the rest, and return. Students lose more marks to one expensive question early in the paper than to any topic they never studied.

    03Diagnose and tier before you teach anything

      Run one common baseline paper for the whole cohort

      Full length, properly timed, invigilated, with all the sections you expect to matter. Ideally about a year before the season. The point is not the score; it is a section-wise profile for every student.

      Analyse by section, not by total

      A total score hides the thing you need. Two students with identical totals may need opposite interventions — one slow but accurate, one fast and careless.

      Tier into three groups

      Nearly ready and needing speed work; specific gap in one or two sections; foundational gap requiring fundamentals. Tiers describe the current diagnosis, not the student, and they change at every re-measurement.

      Publish results to individuals only

      Give every student their own section profile and their tier. Do not publish a rank list. It demotivates precisely the students whose participation you most need, and it has no training value.

      A diagnostic without a scheduled repeat becomes a label. Announce the next full-length assessment when you publish the first one.

    04A 16-week programme skeleton

    Sixteen weeks fits a semester and is long enough for speed to develop. Adapt the topic blocks to your diagnostic results rather than to a textbook's contents page.     Protect the mock weeks

    Weeks 11 to 13 are the ones that get cannibalised by examinations, festivals and drives. They are also the weeks that produce most of the improvement, because they are the only ones that train stamina and pacing. Put them in the annual calendar before the year starts.

    05Mock discipline

    A mock test taken casually at home trains nothing except optimism. The value comes from reproducing the conditions that make real tests hard: the clock, the room, the inability to pause, and the consequence.

    • Run mocks in the same laboratory, on the same machines, at roughly the same time of day as real assessments — this doubles as an infrastructure rehearsal, and you will find the machine and network problems before a recruiter does.
    • Invigilate properly. Phones away, no discussion, strict start and stop.
    • Use the same interface family as the assessments students will actually face, so the navigation, marking and review controls are familiar.
    • No calculators unless the real test allows them, and be clear which it is.
    • Publish solutions within a day, while students still remember their reasoning. A solution key delivered a week later is read by nobody.
    • Run the analysis session as a fixed part of the mock, not as an optional extra. The mock is the data collection; the analysis is the training.

    Track attempted, correct, incorrect and skipped per section rather than only the score. A student who attempts everything and gets half wrong has a different problem from one who attempts half and gets nearly all right, and under negative marking the second student may be scoring better while looking worse.

    06The error log

    The single highest-return habit in aptitude preparation is a maintained error log. Every wrong or skipped question gets one line and a category. After three mocks a student's log tells them exactly what to work on, which no amount of general practice will.

    The distribution is the diagnosis. A log dominated by careless errors and time-outs means the student needs pacing work, not more topics — a distinction that saves weeks of misdirected effort and is invisible without the log.

    07The coding round

    • Practise in an online judge environment rather than a familiar local editor. Students lose real marks to unfamiliar submission mechanics, input reading and output formatting.
    • Teach reading the constraints first: input size determines which approach can pass, and this single habit converts more submissions than any algorithm topic.
    • Teach partial scoring where it applies — a working brute-force solution submitted is worth more than an elegant one left unfinished.
    • Make edge cases a routine: empty input, single element, maximum size, duplicate values.
    • Practise consistently and in small amounts. A daily problem beats a weekend marathon for the same reason speed work does.
    • Be explicit about proctoring and plagiarism. Similarity detection is routine in campus assessments, and a flagged submission can cost a student the drive and the campus its slot.

    08Running it with the staff you actually have

    Most cells cannot fund an external training partner for a whole batch. The programme above is deliverable without one, provided you accept that faculty time goes into structure and analysis rather than into teaching every session.

    • Use senior students who cleared assessments last cycle to run sectional practice. They are credible to the batch and close to the material.
    • Rotate faculty across topic blocks so no individual carries sixteen weeks.
    • Build a question bank from legitimate sources and your own past mocks. Do not circulate pirated material or recruiters' actual question papers — the first is a copyright problem and the second can get your campus barred.
    • Automate scoring. The programme dies of marking, not of teaching.
    • Publish the calendar for all sixteen weeks at the start so departments can schedule around it.
    • Make attendance meaningful by tying the diagnostic and the mocks — not every session — to drive registration eligibility, if your placement policy allows it.

    When should aptitude preparation start?
    At least a full academic year before the placement season, and ideally in the pre-final year. Aptitude is a speed skill built by repeated timed practice, so it improves with distributed effort over months and barely improves with a crash course. A cell that starts preparation in the same term as the drives is training the wrong thing at the wrong time.

    How many mock tests should a student take before the season?
    Enough that a full-length paper stops being an event — for most students that is somewhere around eight to twelve full-length mocks with analysis, spread over the programme. The number matters much less than the analysis: three mocks with a maintained error log produce more improvement than a dozen taken and never reviewed.

    Should students guess when there is negative marking?
    It depends on the penalty and on how far they have narrowed the options, and it is worth working through on the board with the actual rate from the test invite. As a rule of thumb, a genuine narrowing to two plausible options usually makes a guess worth taking under a typical penalty, while a blind guess across all options usually does not. Teach students to compute it rather than to follow a slogan.

    Which section should a weak student prioritise?
    Their own weakest section if the paper has sectional cut-offs, because a cut-off failure discards a good overall score. Where there are no sectional cut-offs, prioritise data interpretation and the quantitative standard forms, which usually carry the best marks-per-minute return. Their error log answers this better than any general advice.

    Do we need to buy an aptitude training platform?
    Not to start. The structure — diagnostic, tiering, topic blocks, weekly sectionals, full-length mocks, error logs — is what produces improvement, and it runs on a question bank and a spreadsheet.
